Sam had lost most of his sight due to cataracts at a young age. He
attended school at Piney Woods near Jackson, MS and developed an interest in
music. He learned drums and trumpet and was skilled enough to earn a
scholarship from the American Conservatory School of Music in Chicago. Of
course Sam hit the South Side joints and sat in with Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf,
Little Walter, and Elmore James. Sam went on to play drums and harmonica
with Elmore from 1952 through 1963 until Elmore's death. Sam then played
around Jackson and throughout the South until teaming up with Anson Funderburgh
in 1986. Sammy J. Myers then moved to Dallas and played continuously with
Anson & The Rockets until being diagnosed with cancer and undergoing surgery
in 2005.
